Usually, male specimens have (from their vent to where their rattle starts) a longer tail than females. If it's a neonate, you could pop it (this is hard, if you can't do it, don't try it without asking for someones' help). If it's an adult, you should buy some restraining tubes and a probe set (if you can't probe, ask for someones' help); that is the best, most reliable way to sex, at least from my experience.

Tubbing and probing is the best way. However you can keep the shed and count the sub cautals scales. I was informed that 20 or over was a male and less was a female.
