problem with eyesight or just bad aim?

nutmaeg Jul 19, 2003 03:35 AM

I have two leos; a 7-month old named Shmee and a 6-month old named Squee.. both female..

When I feed them I put one in the feeding tank - empty aquarium. Squee has no problem catching her crickets.. but Shmee does. She'll stalk and everything, but she misses. This happens several times, and most of the time I have to end up catching a cricket and waving it in front of her and/or maiming/cornering the crickets..

I don't see any problems with her eyes - they seem clear enough. Could it just be bad aim?

I have some geckos like that. It's strange because some are lightning fast and others can't seem to catch a thing. If you are afraid that she isn't getting the nutrtion she needs because of it, try some meal worms. They should be easier to catch. I have a 90 gram male, and I don't know how he has gotten so big because he seems to waste more energy catching his food than he gets from eating it. Sometimes he has to lunge at the same superworm 3 or 4 times before he finally gets it in his mouth.

My leo Phoenix has the same problem...he misjudges the distance and always over-shoots and misses the mealworms even though they are right in front of him. After a try or two he will eventually get it. I think he may have poor depth perception so I feed him out of a small ceramic bowl. This way, he has an easier time of catching the food.
