South Jersey Black Racer

billysbrown Sep 18, 2005 09:36 PM

Here is a black racer photo I've been meaning to post since May. This one posed for the camera, in contrast to most of the racers that I catch that just try to kill me. On this outing (late AM, mid 60s, May 22) I also caught worm snakes, Fowlers toads, and redback salamanders.

Beautiful racer; especially the banding from its younger stage! Where were you that you found a worm snake? In the pines? I've been all over the pines and found almost everything. If you don't mind sharing your spot, please do so, some people are sensitive about sharing locations, but I'm just into photography and such (you could email me at bigteapot@optonline.net). I'd love to see a NJ worm snake.

Thanks for the feedback.

I was at a wildlife management area near Winslow, NJ. I think it's actually called the Winslow WMA. The forest there is not 100% Pine Barrens - there are fields for attracting deer and the forest is probably more oak than pine. I have had poor luck in the deeper Pine Barrens, though I've only gone out a few times.

You mentioned that you are only taking pictures, which is a good thing, because New Jersey is very tight about collection rules.

On the date I found that racer I found 3 worm snakes. Now the funny thing is that I went back twice over the next month (found a large black ratsnake, nesting painted turtle, more toads, green frogs) and on both trips I found a worm snake under one of the same pieces of debris I had found one under on the first trip. Same one? I don't know, but it was strange to the point of spookiness.

See the posts for June 26, July 3, and July 10 at the website below for more on those trips.

Cheers,
Billy
