Not very cool when you have to pick out substrate out of the snakes mouth. Don't be too lazy to feed in another container. Some of us learn the hard way though.

My roomates 1 boa(Flicka),3 corns, 1 cat(Morris) and 1 dog(Chance)
I'm not "Lazy"... he is a shy eater and refuses to eat in any container but his own, even a paper bag overnight.

just because someone doesn't move their snakes during feeding doesn't make them lazy. How many big breeders move their snakes for feeding? Heck, Bob Clark doens't even prekill, along with a lot of other breeders. That's simply a personal preferance and substrate ingestion isn't as big of a risk as some people are led to believe.
That being said all my snakes are on newspaper and I prekill lol.

Uh Oh. the powers that be didn't like what I said I guess. Wasn't all that bad.
Quig
LOL, and Cole just so ya know, I wasn't knockin' you.

No worries I didn't think you were but I never saw what you wrote. I wasn't writing that in response to you. Lazy to me is the person that leaves snake poo laying in the cage for weeks and there is mold growing on it.

There is a movie where a man touches a hunters hand and at the same time touches a deer that the hunter had just shot. The deer was still alive but about to die. The hunter could feel the horror that the deer felt as it died. The man had given the hunter a glimpse of something he had not felt or understood about all of the animals he had killed. In the movie the hunter never hunted again after feeling what the deer felt because of what he had done. What am I saying? I am saying I looked at the photo and saw a mammal being constricted to death and urinating as it convulsed for it's last breath. I saw nothing cool about the act. I realize that I feed my Royals also but I do not find it cool. I find a respectful way to dignify that which is nature. This is of course only my opinion but I do truly think that respect is to honor. I personally do not like watching any animal suffer or be abused. I realize in this situation it is not abuse on the snake’s part but the way nature made them. I find no pleasure in watching an animal suffer even if it is a rodent. My grand father taught me to respect nature and animals. When he would kill animals to eat he got no pleasure from it. He had immense respect for them.

I agree 100%. Cool picture my a$$.
You've got to be kidding.....
I agree 100% with Billy's Girl..... I never once said that I ENJOY the death of a rodent, I said it was an unusual and interestong way for it to eat.... And then they just assume I am some kid over an anthill with a magnifying glass! 1) Your snake has to eat one way or another. 2) EVERYTHING dies....

At least snakes kill their prey before eating it! Have you ever watched The Discovery Channel? Antelopes, impalas, wildebeests; all, most unfortunately, are usually alive when predators begin to eat them. Given the choice, I believe I would want to be a mouse asphyxiated prior to be eaten. Just my opinion…
I love that movie. I feed all my nonven pre-killed so I don't really get a show but it doesn't bother me. On the other hand, watching my edb and my canebrake eat fascinates my. Normally the cane kills the mice the quickest but last week my edb had a 3 second kill. That's my girl!

Well put......It is sad but needed. Took me a long time to get over it!

I see it this way............Animals must eat. What they eat is, in the wild, suppplied to them by nature. How they eat, whether it be an herbivore or carnivore, is an instinctual thing given each of them over many thousands of years of existance. If it bothers you that much don't keep carnivores. Keep cows, then justify eating them yourselves. Although a picture of a snake eating a rat, or anything else for that matter, might not be pleasant to look at it's still a natural occurance in the life of a snake. Instead of rippin' somebody for showing this type of thing you might simply suggest they not do it in the forum because you are uncomfortable with it. A little respect goes a long way.
Quig
if you don't like it don't look at it. It is hard to believe that anyone on this forum is deeply affected by seeing a picture of a snake constricting a mouse. Go to the kingsnake forum and look at the ophidiophagy pics.

It's just not entertaining nor is it cool? It is what it is and it’s not about being offended, insulted, degraded, it’s about respect for another mammal. I also do not like the fact that when adult ball pythons are shipped to this country a lot of them are thrown across the room into boxes with many sustaining broken backs and other unnecessary injury’s because the people boxing them are not concerned about a bunch of ordinary snakes that they find all of the time. I have been told this from reliable sources who have watched in Africa as they are boxed. I am sure not all people in the snake market ship in that manner but it is not what I consider to be respect for the animals. I almost chose to be a veterinarian. I guess you could say I don’t find enjoyment or entertainment from watching an animal suffer. If this offends you then I apologize for my opinion which also extends to people. Yes the animal kingdom does have the carnivore creatures. That is not the issue. The issue is that some people enjoy watching them kill other animals. I am actually pleased that snakes eat rodents. This world would be a dismal place with rodents over populated. There are people who actually enjoy killing snakes. I don’t. I guess they would think it's funny that I actually like snakes and that I do not enjoy watching them being killed. What a crazy concept to not like watching any animal suffer. I realize that the concept of respecting other animals might be laughed at but I thought an opinion with perhaps another way of thinking would not be put down but talked about on a forum with open minded people who like animals enough that they constantly share thoughts and photos of animals they are proud of.

Do you empathize the same way with your grass when you cut it? Or how about the butterfly you hit with your car while driving? Or maybe the germs your body kills with its own immune system. These, too are all living organisms. Bottom line is, your empathy toward other organisms reaches deeper than most people's on this forum. It's not right or wrong for you to feel that way, but you don't have the right to try to force your opinion on other people. Many of us thought that was a cool picture. If you didn't like it, please don't click on it again. I feel no empathy for that rodent. However, that doesn't make me a heartless or cold person. When you speak of an open mind, remember not to close yours while you're talking.

Did I ever once say that the fact that the pinkie was dying was cool or that I found it entertaining? NO..... I said that it was an interesting and unusuall AKA "COOL!" way for him to eat. I completely understand your empathy for the rats but the fact that you continually rephrase what I said originally and aparently have not listened to one thing I have said since the original post just baffles me.....

I have taken pictures of my snakes eating - first meals - first rat pups - to prove that a snake I'm selling is eating, etc.
But with that being said - how many of us have pictures of cows or chickens being slaughtered on our walls because it's interesting, cool, odd, different?
Yeah - things gotta eat - but at what point does it cross the line?

perhaps you are right that for me to have an opposing opnion is not open minded? If I have offended anyone please except my apology. The photo could have some scientific value that I am not aware of and I am sure that no one looked at the rodent and enjoyed it. Just to let you know I did not look at the photo but once. I agree if you do not like something like a photo, movie and on and on then simply ignore what you dislike and do not share an opinion which would oppose the thoughts of others. Now thats open minded. My point is simply as long as fun is not derived from such, then we all agree!

If death and suffering aren't entertaining, why does 90% of our news center around it? Why do they seem to always report every murder yet fail to report on most of the community service that is going on in the community? Why do people look when they drive by an accident?
Because it IS entertaining!
I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but I disagree with the statement that it's not entertaining. We crave suffering. Why are talk shows so popular? Is it possible that we crave all these things so that we can assert that we live "normal" lives?
I've got a real neat picture but unfortunately it's off topic. It's a picture of an argentine boa constricting a mouse and the mouse is urinating and it looks like a fountain the picture captured the moment perfectly. I've never seen it happen before or after that event, I was just lucky to have my camera.

To me..it almost seems as if "those people" must have taken slapstick comedy(three stooges, banana peel falls, etc),and ran with it somewhere in their mental growth(,or something).
...note
Unless you have ever laughed at someone that very well could have been hurt in a fall. That you had just witnessed.(Before finding out that they are actually alright)..then i'm not talking about "you".

I'm always amazed at the eficiency with which they kill.... unless they eat it backwards
