How can I purchase or learn about a breading license???

morphking Sep 19, 2005 02:17 AM

Ok, here is my problem. I want to breed ball pythons. In my city it is illegal to "keep them as a pet". Is there any license of any sorts that I can get that will allow me to breed these beautifull creatures? The city I live in is surrounded by other cities that allow the snakes to be kept (sucks for me). I live in Allentown PA by the way. If there is anything you can do for me please feel free to post a response. Thankyou....

Depends on the area and the laws. I have a state license but it does not give me the legal right to keep reptiles in local areas that do not allow animals without special permissions. I would check with the local gov't to see what your options are. Check with local zoos and reptile dealers like pet stores. They should have some info on the laws.

I guess you could approach your city council people and ask for a variance.
Does it exclude all reptiles?
Do you have a copy of the local law?

I used to live in a small town where they tried to tell us it was illegal to keep any exotics. When we insisted that they SHOW us in writing, they couldn't do it! The people at city hall just didn't like the idea. Even if it is an ordinance (sp?), it is possible there is some kind of loophole, or maybe it allows you to have one per person, or some other provision that you can work with. You have to read it for yourself.

If it's illegal to keep them as a pet, you would probably not be able to keep them in your home within city limits no matter the reason. Maybe you could rent a small space outside of the city limits and keep your breeding stock there.
