Quick Help needed! My veiled chameleons health problem.

Marlz Sep 19, 2005 06:12 AM

I wasnt at home for four days and figured that my adult veiled chameleon would be ok without food. I rigged the water so that there would be plenty of that. When i came back I found that the water container had fallen down and he was without both food and water the whole time.

He ate and drank when i got back but had a dried fleshy thing coming out of his anus (about 2 cm long). This seems like it could be something serious. Any ideas.

He has been totally helthy and active right up till this point. And actually is still active and healthy looking.

Is the "fleshy thing" attached? How big, and what color? If it is pink turning to dark brown it may be a prolapsed part of the intestine or a hemipene, and it will need IMMEDIATE vet care. Until you can get to a vet keep it moist with spraying. Once the tissue dries out you can't save it and a vet may have to remove it. If it dropped free, and was whitish yellow to orange it was probably a hard mass of concentrated urates, and signals that he needs a lot more water generally, not just from the 4 days without.

Yes, it is fleshy colored and has now dried out.

There are no reptile vets where I live.

Anything I can do?

UPDATE

I actually found a vet that could treat reptiles. He said its the chameleons penis that is sticking out. He says it got excited and then was too dry to pull it back in. The vet applied some lubrication and we are taking a wait and see approach.

Thanks for the help. Ill let you know how it goes.
