Free ranging?

crust112 Sep 19, 2005 10:53 AM

I purchased a male veiled chameleon almost three months ago and he has been doing great in the spacious cage I built. Recently, I was hand feeding him and forgot to close the cage door. I left for work and when I returned 11 hrs later, I found him perched on the back of my couch that sits in front of my sliding glass doors. Its only about six feet away but should I be concerned? I mean, would he just be moving toward the bright light source given the chance or are the bulbs Im using not enough?

P.S. In the picture he is upset because I woke him, which is hard to do.

He may be unhappy or he may have decided to be curious d explore while no one is around, when he felt safe enough.

Windows block UV rays by the way. something like 90% is reflected? Something high like that.

Here is some info about letting chameleons go free range in your house though.

Hi there,

From my experience with "escapee'" chameleons, they usually seek a place that is light, and that is high from the ground. Most likly your chameleon just wanted to be high off the ground, it gives them a sense of security as they are aboreal reptiles. Its basically in their instincts to climb. I wouldnt be too worried about him, as long as he is hydrated now.

I dont think he was seeking UV rays, for glass blocks 100% of the rays that come through the windows...but he COULD have been attracted to the light, especially if it was warm.

What types of lights are you using on your veiled right now?

By the way, he sure is a cutie, your doing a fabulous job on him.

Anyway, Cobalt is turning a little purple-y. I just posted new pics of him, and his bars are starting to darken. Thanks though!

I figured that the windows were blocking most the light but didnt know if maybe he would be attracted to the light. His cage is rather tall, I had read about how they prefer to be above human heights because it makes them feel safe, so I bought a cage that was taller than me. So my cage is around 6 feet tall. I am using ReptiSun 5.0 bulb I think and I added some extra lighting with a few old normal bulbs for fish tanks. I could take a picture of the cage if you needed? Thanks for the comments about him, I've been trying to take good care of him, lots of reading and lots of attention to him. I am worried about feeding and how often I should use Rep-Cal with D3 but what I am doing seems to be ok.
