Is this a bull snake?

Mk00000 Sep 19, 2005 12:01 PM

I have two pictures here. I hope they work. I need to know if this is a bull snake, and what type?

It was slightly aggressive when I caught it - struck out once with the stick I was using and hissed and shook its tail when I really cornered it. It was only 14 to 18 inches long. Do they grow any longer?

How can I tell the difference between it and a rattlesnake (other than no rattle?) I read once that you can tell by the patterns on the back or something. I would really like to know as we do have rattlers in the area and I have kids.

Thanks!

What part of the country do you reside?? It is indeed either a bull or a gopher. Not a rattler.

Yep I used to read the comics every month when they came out, but then they started entertwining them so you had to buy all of them to keep up with them. So that is when I stopped buying them.

Yes, it is a bull snake.

Western New Mexico is bullsnake area. In mid New Mexico is a smaller intergrade zone between bull- and Sonoran gopher snake. Westwards of it there live pure Sonorans (affinis).

And decided by patternclass your photo shows a (south western) bull snake.
