Looking for a good Vet in Texas

august9 Sep 19, 2005 04:37 PM

Can anyone help me locate a good Vet in Texas (hopefully Dallas area) that can take a look at my Egyptian Cobra. He seems healthy, but I want to get him checked for viruses, etc.

Thanks for all your help!

Regards,

Martin

If you just want to do a parasite check, just take in a fresh fecal sample...you can refrigerate it to keep it fresh if you can't take it in immediately.

You will still want to find a vet who will see venomous, just in case something does happen that requires the snake to be physically seen and examined, but for internal parasite checks, a fecal sample taken to the vet will usually suffice.

The best place is www.arav.com. It is the Assocation of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians. There is an online membership list divided geographically. You'll have to call down this list to find one that see's hots. Also note that this is the public version of the list. If no luck finding a hot vet contact Dr. Ken Harkewicz and he may have some other suggestions for you. Also make sure to ask for referals at the clinics that turn you down, chances are this isn't the first time they've been asked this question.

ps, while refridgerated fecals may work okay for finding ova, there's nothing like fresh poop, especially when protozoa and flagelette's may be a problem.
