copperhead rattlesnake?

boconn03 Sep 19, 2005 08:42 PM

I live in Charlotte, NC and last night I terminated what I believe was a copperhead. However, when cornered this snake bowed up and it's tail rattled. I had 2 others who witnessed this. Is there such a thing as a copperhead rattlesnake? I have pictures which I believe show it to be a copperhead. Has anyone ever heard of a hybrid like this?

Are there rattlesnakes with similar markings to a copperhead?

Here is how you can tell if it was a rattlesnake. Look at the tail, if there are rattles, it's a rattlesnake. Many other snakes will rattle their tails, even though they aren't rattlesnakes. Your best bet for an ID is to post the pictures of the snake.

Lots of species of snakes, including copperheads, will rattle their tails when disturbed. However, I am NOT confirming that this snake is a copperhead, in fact, copperheads do rattle their tails, but so do MANY other species of harmless snakes.

There are some good online resources showing pics of NC snakes, including one linked a few posts down. Try checking out those to see if the snake was a copperhead at all.
