I use 1/2 of a folded paper towel. It has worked great so I have never tried anything else. I also just use the ring and not the rest of the top of the mason jar. Some like to cut/punch out holes on the tops and use that on top of the paper towel, but it made my cultures too wet.

I use non-toxic sponges, they work well for me because I can just lift them off and tap the flies into a jar of supplement, they don't get moist, provide adequate ventilation, inexpensive, recyclable, and you can use the leftover sponge(from cutting the circle out of it) to plug holes in your tanks.
Up until a few weeks ago I just used paper towels. Once they get moist they rip but other than that they work alright. Now I use the fruit fly containers that black jungle sells. They come with vented lids. They cost a little more than just deli containers but work very well.
