My new pacman doesn't eat as much as he should be...

nickmo Sep 19, 2005 09:56 PM

My new pacman seems to be doing fine other than the fact that his appetite isn't what I think it should be. He only seems to eat 1 medium dusted cricket a day. One of the problems is he refuses to eat from tongs, so I can't use a feeder fish or something. I might try a small nightcrawler soon if I can find them.

He likes to stay burrowed, and I can usually tell that he's hungry when he comes out, so I take my mist bottle and make in into a straight stream and use that to chase a cricket over towards him and he'll eat. The only problem is he only unburrows once a day or less than that, and sometimes even after he eats a cricket, he won't eat anymore even if its climbing all over him.

My temp is right around 81 during the day and 76 at night. The humidity I don't think is very accurate because the gauge is right under the light that I use. The light seems to dry out the substrate (bed a beast) pretty fast even though it's not supposed to. I don't know if it actually gets dry or if its just the surface that looks dry but my frog never needs to get in his water dish. It seems like I have to spray the stuff down every few hours. I'm using a 25 watt daytime blue heat bulb and a 15 watt red one at night.

Anyway, should I be worried about any of this? I've had my frog for almost three weeks and he hasn't really grown any. What should I do?

Thanks.

if hes eating at all it shouldnt be too bad. heating sounds fine. what exact kind of bedding are you using? i prefer wet paper towels or bed-a-beast. what was he on when you got him? some dont live up to their reputation as well as others, yours may be one of them. you can also try a rosey red or a small small goldfish, make sure it is a healthy one and you pick it, dont let the guy at the shop pick it for you. in general you shouldnt really have to worry. what species of pacman? (ornate, green, albino, fantasy, red)

He's an albino pacman and I use bed-a-beast as substrate. I've tried to feed him fish but like I said he won't eat out of tongs. He gets scared even if I take the lid off the cage.

you can set the fish in front of him and back off to let him relax. most likely the flopping will spark his attention. it is good to get them to eat out of tongs so you know that they are eating, but if they lunge at food too fast they could hurt themselves on the tongs, whether they are metal, plastic, or wood.

Sounds like everything is fine. Try feeding 3 times a week instead of every day.
