Feeding from the wild...

Kikai Jul 19, 2003 09:19 AM

I'd like to supplement my beardies diet with plants, insects, and flowers from the wild if possible. I already pick dandelion greens for Baby Grendal, but am not sure what insect or larva would be OK for consumption. Also, I'd like to feed some flowers, just want to make sure they aren't toxic. I know roses and violets are consumable by US, but not sure about reptiles. If anyone has any info, experience or links, I'd appreciate it!

I wouldn't feed insects from outside. They could have traveled from a yard that uses insecticides or other harmful chemicals that could be dangerous for your beardies.

I'm not sure of the exact web address, but Melissa Kaplan had an extensive list of safe plants to feed them. You may want to do a search on her name. Just be sure you are getting them from untreated plants (including no fertilizer).

Good Luck!

inscects from the wild, i would probably refrain from that. Sometimes they can carry parasites toxins etc. definetly avoid LIGHTNING BUGS, as they are EXTREMELY toxic to our beardies, one could kill them. As for flowers, i know hibiscus leaves and flowers are edible, and dandelion flowers and leaves are to. MAKE SURE that your yard is not sprayed with pesticides or gets pesticide runoff...beardies are very sensitive to pesticides. Here is a good webpage on nontoxic plants from the wild.

I agree with everyone else. No wild insects unless you keep them for about a month inside to get all of the toxins out and NO LIGHTNING BUGS!!! There is a website that sells forige mixes for tortoises but I forget what its called. They have one thats for desert reptiles that you could grow for your beardies. The only downside is that you would need to tend to a garden. If you grow your own bearded dragon food make sure you don't use any chemicals; even if you used chemicals last year there will still be traces of them for the next five years(I think its five, but it may be more).
