Why I love the corn forum....

phiber_optikx Sep 20, 2005 01:50 AM

Here is the reason I love being part of the corn forum.... I made a post titled "a cool picture" with a picture of my ball python eating, and within 2 hours somebody has posted a reply basically saying I am horrible for thinking it's "cool" that a pinkie should die etc, etc, etc. So I think on this for a moment and decide it is my fualt for not emphasising that the WAY he was eating was cool, not the fact that he was killing something. Well today I go back and see that even AFTER I clarified this, that I was being refered to as someone who "enjoys" watching the rats die.... It is just little things like these that really get under my skin! Luckily for me I can always come home to the good ole corn forum! You guys are always nice, friendly, and understanding!

how people say how cruel it is to feed snakes, but yet if most of them who learn they have a mouse or rat in their home will start setting traps..........
i keep both snakes and rats......... none of my rats are used for food, there is a difference...
people kill and eat cows, pigs and chicken everyday.

starsevol Sep 20, 2005 08:10 AM

I keep snakes and rats too. Cornsnakes and rats are the 2 best animals in the world imo. My corns eat f/t mice. I am glad f/t is becoming more well known. I dont like live feeding but I know its neccessary sometimes when you have a non feeder. I LOATHE PETA with a passion but I think it is our responsibility to be as kind as we can be to all animals, pets and prey alike. Someone on here once referred to "my kind" as welfarists and I kind of liked it. I usually hang out on this forum and a few pet rat forums. Anyway, I love this forum and the people here ROCK!! They are so helpful and the few times I had a question or a problem I was answered very quickly. Sorry for the babblefest but I love it here!!

I have rats and snakes also but I have Blue Rats and they are great pets. The babies start out as sky blue and become gray-blue as they get older. If you don't know what they look like Google it..

...though personally I prefer hamsters to rats, petwise. Not as smelly. Though my sister had the tamest rat I ever saw, once upon a time.

i work in a petshop, and the one animal i am absolutly petrified of are the hamsters, nasty little bitey things (IMO). i also believe that it is the other way round, at the shop the rats dont smell along as they are cleaned out once a week, the hamsters have to be done eveny 3rd day.

but i suppose it is each to their own

Male longhaired hamsters are sweeties.

Females tend to produce scent as they go into heat every 3 days.

Dwarf hamsters are the mean ones.

il agree with you to some extent on that last comment, yes i have found the female smell more, but all in all i just think hamsters smell lol. i also agree withyou somewhat when you say that dwarf hamsters can be nasty. i find that the smaller hamsters like the russian dwarfs, the chinese dwarf and the cambells hamsters to be the nippiest, yet the worlds smallest hamsters, the roberovski's are one of the nicest breeds you can get, although they are very difficult to handle due to their very fast running speeds, they are one type of hamster i have yet to be bitten by after 6 years of working in a petshop.
they syrian hamsters (aka the tebby bear/golden hamsters) can be nice, as long as they are used to being handled, if they are not....god help your fingers

gerbils are brilliant little pets, i actually push these over hamsters for younger children. they are clever, (i.e. usually wont jump) and again i have yet to be bitten by one. i definatly prefer gerbils to hamsters the only problem i find with gerbils is their chewing. they'l eat their way out of anything.

I used to have a pet rat named Blackie. She was very sweet.
Right now I have 3 mice and they are cute! I love the way that they scurry around there cage. Once they are gone though I want to get another rat because, Blackie was such an awesome pet.
Actually I have seen the Blue Rats and they are very pretty!

lauralyon Sep 20, 2005 02:28 PM

to me he was. i never realised how old he actually was until i looked back over the dates all the photo's i have of him were taken, to me he still seemed like the was 10 weeks old when i got him!

you could never hope to meet a rat as cuddly and intelegent as rax. he always had to come out of his cage at 7.30pm, if he didnt, he would let him self out! i even had clips (like the ones you have on dog leash's) on the cage door, but he always managed to get them off! he'd then make his way down stairs to were i always sat and he'd either find me as i was sat in my chair, or he'd sit on my chair and wait for me!! then once you'd found him/he'd found you, all he'd do it climb up onto my shoulder, nestle in my hair, and go to sleep. but you try to put him back in his cage and he'd screech at you lol, never bit or threatened to or anything, he just screamed his little head off!
i dont think any other rat could ever replace him in my life.

he was one in a billion

do you have any problems with the snakes eating or not eating with the presense of rodent smell in the air all the time?? i had pet colored mice when i was a kid and just loved them. i must say i'm NOT a rat person but love those cute little colored mice. my sister and i both had them and they were as tame as can be.
i would like to get some more but didn't know how that would effect the snakes smelling them all the time. unless they are kept in another room. i feed f/t so didn't know what would happen if anything.

raisnok Sep 20, 2005 07:12 PM

my rats are in another room, i havent noticed my snakes to not eat, if anything they eat better...

starsevol Sep 20, 2005 07:18 PM

I had snakes before I got pet rats and never noticed a difference in the snakes appetite. They are kept in the same room and the rats dont seem to care at all. I do, however wear gloves when taking a snake out of its cage so it doesnt get the wrong idea but I shed the gloves as soon as the snake is in my hands. I also wash hands if I have been handling either. So far no snake has tried to bite. Its working out well.

Also, to the person who kept Blackie...it has recently been discovered that rats are much happier and heathier if they have a friend to snuggle with. They are social little critters. So if you adopt again, consider getting 2...more fun for you AND Blackie II!!

okcorn11 Sep 21, 2005 07:41 PM

Thank you far the info!! I was watching some rats the other day in a pet store and 2 of them were having so much fun chasing each other around!

raisnok Sep 21, 2005 08:03 PM

i have 5 rats who live in a 3ft high by 3 ft long by 2 ft deep cage..... with a few different levels to it, you should see them play, they run up the wire like it was nothing.

Colorfulcorns Sep 21, 2005 09:42 AM

I haven't have any problems so far and I have about 14 cages of mice and rats.

I keep my mice in the same room as the snakes. Does't seem to bother either the mice or the snakes. And if a snake should ever escape, it makes it so much easier to find it!

As to people being nicer here, isn't that the truth. Someone posted on one of the forums that people tend to resemble the snakes they keep. The jist of it was that Corn people are very easy going and curious, ball people tend to lurk in the dark waiting for unsuspecting prey to pass by so they can leap on them.

Most people only care if the animal in question is alive.
These same people don't care if there pre-killed.(cow,chickens,pigs....etc....)
