can you please sex my Elaphe helena?

iveemci Sep 20, 2005 09:55 AM

hi to all

I have one Elaphe helena, the snake is long 93 cm, the tail is long 19cm, the weight is about 110 gr. I think the snake is about 15 months old.

I tried to sex it with a sond (I hope its the right world), and it penetrate about 5 scales under the tail, that let me think I have a female.. but the lenght let me think the opposite..

here is some images, what do you think ?

If the probe is going in more than about 3 subcaudal scales, it's probably a male. Impossible to tell from your photo but if you post another with a close-up of the tail behind the cloaca/vent, I can take a more informed guess.

is it hard to sex a snake/easy to harm the snake or if you have a pretty good idea of how to do it can you just do it a few times until you get used to it?

thanks for the answer..

do you need a superMacro pic of the cloaca when its opened ?
I can try to do it..

some friends told me that you can also know the sex if you look at the snake when its defecate...but I think its hard to get that moment :D

No. Just a picture of the underside of the tail behind the cloaca will work.

If you can get the cloc opened use gentle pressure and just pop it.If theres a hemipenis you have your answer.I cant find the link that gives complete directions on how to do it.Some snakes can be tricky to probe or pop.Just guessing I would say a male.I have a 50/50 chance of being right.lol...Paul

Sometimes you can feel the hemipenis as a small bump without popping.
