Rankins Questions

rkjohnson2 Sep 20, 2005 12:21 PM

Hello all,

I have a couple of questions so bear with me. First off, would you recommend housing two rankins dragons together? I know they are social animals which is why I ask. What size tank would be good for two rankins? I have had a 40 gallon breeder recommended, and am wondering if this is a good size. Is that a preferable size because of its floor space? I can get a 55 gallon tank, but is the 40 better since it's shorter?

Finally, does anyone know any good breeders for Rankins. I am thinking about getting two rankins in mid-early January, after a vacation so I won't be gone in the first couple weeks of their move to a new home. Any tips, pointers, ideas regarding Rankins are more than welcome. Thanks!

A 40 breeder should be large enough. And A better size then a 55 since it is deeper. but If you can ,go for a 50 breeder . It is 3 feeet long and 18 inches deep. Two rankins can be housed in that size enclosure as long as they both are not males. And with babies you cant tell the sex. Also You are going to want to raise them In a ten or 15 gl tank. A 40-50 gl is was too big for a baby.

As far as good breeders

dragons den has some as well as sundial reptiles. If you are planning on raising two I would get one from each so they wont be related.

hope this helps

So I could raise them in a 20L, which I already have, to start with and then move them into a bigger tank with age. How old/long should they be before moving them into the larger tank.

Yes I would raise them In the 20 long. But it all depends on how big they are when you get them. Most rankins for sale are babies though. And as far as moving them into the bigger enclosure, well theres no set time frame. it depends on how fast they grow. i would wait untill they are at least 6 months old.

Found a 30 gallon breeder on craigslist for free. This tank has the same floor dimensions as the 40 breeder, but is only 12" tall. Am I right in thinking that this is too short?

12 inches high is fine for raising them but for the adults you may want to go bigger. 18-24 inches.
