Impulse buy......fla intergrades....pics

the_Ox Sep 20, 2005 06:29 PM

I picked up this pair not long ago. They are wild collected, but have been in captivity for a couple years. The guy I got them from gave me (supposedly) exact directions to where he collected them. Any guesses? I broke a few of my own rules in this purchase. Not sure exactly what happened, I just looked them over real good, held them for a while, and next thing you know I owned them.I have great setups for them (as with all of our snakes) and hopefully I can get babies next year. I must admit they are a tad jittery, especially the female, in fact she is a handful! I am used to owning pyros, rtbs, balls, and corns, these surely have a lot more edge to them. I am a getula virgin, so I would appreciate any/all/good/bad opinions about the snakes. The first two pics are the male, and the last one is the female after a good sized meal.

thanx for looking

Matt

Nice looking kings! They are some of my favorites. I'm not convinced they are intergrades though. I have heard lots of discussion about where the intergrade zone begins and ends in Florida and I think its far from conclusive. Not long ago snakes like those were known simply as floridana.

I'll try a guess on the locality. How about south of the lake in Palm Beach county near South Bay? Phil

The male looks like South Bay but if I had to guess on the female I would say Moore Haven in Glades county. The snakes tend to be darker on the southwestern side of the lake. Phil

I actually caught them and you were right on the first time. They came from just south of Belle Glade on either side of Miami Canal Road. Miami canal and the sparse vegetation and the loads of gators make a pretty good barrier to prevent movement back and forth. The female came from the west side and the male from the east.

Yeah, I love the snakes. Thanx for a good deal! I was slightly off on my relay of location. I actually marked it on my Fla map where we thought you said, I'm a little off. Whatever. To me the snakes are a little flighty, but like I said, I am used to dealing with other species.

Thanx again

Matt

According to him, they were collected just Southeast of the lake, just north of rt 441, Palm Beach County. According to him, he collected them both from the same area. Really, though, who knows. Yeah, I know some people believe them to be intergrades, while others don't (not trying to start a debate). I don't have the knowledge to argue taxonomy of kingsnakes, so I just went by what they were labeled. Thanx for the compliments, I really like these snakes too.

So do you like them?? I never had a problem with them being flighty but the male did seem to be part ball python. He seem to spend a lot of time balled up tight. I just sent you a email.
