THE STAR (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia) 11 September 05 Snakes spell good things (Vasthu Sastra by T. Selva)
Is the sighting of a snake a good omen? I have been swamped with calls and emails from readers following the appearance of the king cobra at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Puchong, Selangor, which attracted thousands of people for two days early this week.
Since Vedic times, snakes have been worshipped in many cultures, and like many other creatures, what they portend is regarded as a sign from God. It is vital that a dweller interprets these signals correctly so he can be prepared for what's to come.
Snake sightings in temples are known in India and snake worshipping is an ancient religious practice that's believed to enhance an individual’s well-being. In India, temples have been built in honour of snakes and annual festivals are also held.
In Hindu religion and mythology, the snake is one of the most significant and powerful symbols. In Jainism and Buddhism, the snake is regarded as sacred because it has divine qualities. In the case of the 123-year-old Puchong temple, the appearance of the serpent signifies that this place of worship has enhanced its divine powers because such an occurrence is rare in Malaysia.
Although the reptile could have come from the nearby undergrowth in the vicinity, for it to coil itself around the Amman statue and remain there for two days is unusual and auspicious.
According to my master, Yuvaraj Sowma, God comes in many forms and people should be prepared to read these signs as they foretell that something is going to happen. (See graphic)
He said significance of the five-metre-long albino-like cobra was that the Puchong township would see a boom in development and its residents would benefit.
It is incorrect to interpret all omens involving serpents as bad signs because these creatures bring more benefit than harm.
Those who had a chance to view the snake before it slipped away from the temple should regard it as a calling to enhance their spiritual faith and wisdom. Those who missed the sighting can offer prayers to and seek blessings from the Nagamah deity (snake god) at the temple.
