perch width?

iceyesnteeth Sep 20, 2005 09:56 PM

most people reccomend a perch width to be what?about the same as the sake?? i have several sized perches in my new vivarium and i have noticed that mine usually chooses a larger perch than the one suggested.there is a thinner perch at almost the same height but always picks this one perch that is close to being twice the thickness of my snake.to tell you the truth,he actually looks more comfortable ,and less droopy on a slightly thicker perch.i know that spine proplems can result in a perch size that is way off,but how off is off?? id assume in the wild they utilise branches of all sorts of sizes within their comfort range.besides,my snake is still growing so id like to use a perch size that he can keep for a while as long as its safe.im not talking about a much bigger perch but it is slightly thicker than reccomended.so??

i think that a perch the same size or just a little bigger is great... i personally would not go more then .5 times bigger then the snake...

is the bigger perch that your snake uses the highest point in the cage???

yea,i know what youre getting at,hes choosing a lager sized perch because its higher and his desire to be on the highest perch is stronger than his need to be on the proper sized perch.you could be right but there is a thinner perch almost right next to it.actually its the same perch, its a real branch and it forks.one fork is the correct diameter and the other fork is thicker.who knows.but the larger sized one is just about one and a half times his thickness.im gonna stick with it because it gives him some room to grow.id rather keep these as long as possible because its a live vivarium and im attempting to get some moss and vines to grow on it.
