It should come on right away like any other lightbulb. Return it. Then go to Walmart and buy a red bulb there. Just a regular old red bulb. They work just the same and are a heck of a lot cheaper.

Wow, wow, wow...

Light bulbs are not the same as heat bulbs! The same way a "black light" from the hardware store is intended for LIGHT, not heat, while a black/blue "moonlight/nocturnal" heat bulb is intended for HEAT, not light.

Yes, due to a wonderful thing called electricity, heat is created by average, hardware store bulbs, this heat is a byproduct of the bulb's intention...NOT a proper heating mechanism.

If you just want it for light, get a "moonlight" blue/black reptile bulb. If its for heat, sorry but think again - just try heating a cage with a light bulb - If you can get your cage up to the low 90's with a light bulb, hell has just frozen over!!

For my terrariums, I use red heat bulbs. Some brands emit little to no light but emit a lot of heat. Others glow red quite noticeably. Both HEAT perfectly. To make sure its working and not a "dud", look at the filament - the wire thingie attached to the bulb base, enclosed by the glass for safety. If the filament is emiting a soft glow and it heats up the surrounding area, its cool. If there's no heat, no sign of energy in the filament, and/or the bulb rattles when you shake it, its a dud.

I have had the same thing with the ESU brand Red heat lamps. I've had a couple of duds that literally put out no light, but yes, the filament was barely glowing, and even the good bulbs produced very little light. I've found Fluker's brand produces the most lighting along with the heat if you can find them. They can be ordered online:
www.flukerfarms.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=31
They produce a lot of heat and a very nice red lighting for viewing. I'm waiting on a shipment of Exo Terra Night-Glo bulbs right now to see which I like better, the Red or Moon glow.

I have gotten cage temps of upwards of 90 degrees with a lightbulb from walmart. For my geckos I use UTH, but with my beardies, uro, collards etc I used regular old light bulbs for heat. At night I used the regular old red one and all kept the temps just fine.

i use regular light bulbs to heat my iguanas, beardies and chameleons, for the iguanas its set at 100*F fo the chams its at 95*f and for the beardies uts at 110*f

any lightbulb can be used for heat, except flourescent tube lights, lol just depends on the wattage, the highter the wattage, the more heat you get

Well, everyone seems to be suggesting that all the pet-owners here should use "soft-white" or "crystal clear" light bulbs for heat.

Great! Since they're so much cheaper, lets keep those on 24H a day (as they are the only heat source in the picture & since it gets colder at night) and add a few UV flourescents -- the leos LOVE the bright light!! On top of that, we can add a tropical misting system and a mini strobe light**

** Mini disco ball must be installed first - both are available in the auto section of your local Wallmart.

Warning: Walmart may be closed due to legal suits criticizing their slave..oops, I mean "empoloyee" treatment.

nothing will happen to the leos with a light over them, all its doing is simulating a light cycle

you, need to calm down though, and stop questioning everyone, i'd suggest a midol?

I said I use UTH for my geckos. I merely said that the bulbs from Walmart are cheaper and will produce heat. I have kept those bulbs on many reptiles (not geckos) with excellent results. The temps were fine with those bulbs. Also we were originally talking about red bulbs not the soft white ones. Heck, if we want to be perfect why not shell out the $40 for ceremic heaters which produce no light at all, since money is obviously no object. I got tired of paying $9 for fancy bulbs that either did not work at all out of the box or burned out within a week, and I had great success with the red bulbs from Walmart. My beardie, collards, and uro did just fine and all lived healthy active lives. All are still living said lives, just not with me as I had to find them good homes when I joined the Army. I get updates on the frequently and all are fine and healthy. And I will not get into the economics/politics of Walmart except to say that many communities would welcome the jobs and 'slave labor' wages they pay. It is unions with their inflated wage and dwindling political power that oppose Walmart. Also the law suits will not put Walmart out of business. They are and will continue to be the world's largest retailer. Dang, I feel like I work for Walmart making statements like that, but it's true. Anyway, enough of this, cheribomb I find your advice and guidance on this forum to be excellent, and I do not wish to get into a verbal war. I just wanted to say my piece, and while I do not agree with manhatten and his reference to certain womanly cycles, I will agree that you may want to take a deep breath. Stress can be a killer.
