Melamine for argentine black and white tegu

ZEKyle Sep 20, 2005 11:44 PM

I really want to get a new enclosure for my tegu soon because it is outgrowing its 60 gallon reptile tank and I was wondering about melamine enclosures. I talked to a couple of people and they say dont buy a melamine one. Instead to go with a vision cage b/c of the humidity they need and that melamine will get messed up. I really dont like vision cages that much so possibly I will get a custom glass reptile cage 6' x 2' x 2. I would like to know your oppinion if you could use a melamine enclosure. I have heard you can put some type of lining in to keep the wood from warping. Or is there some type of non-txic water proofing sealant you can put on it? Any suggestions are welcome. I have found a great deal on a melamine enclosure and I really want to get it, I just dont want to be mad I got it later.

Go ahead the buy the melamine cage but don't use it as is. Instead, laminate fiberglass reinforced panel, also known as FRP board, onto the inside.

Getting this stuff to fit perfectly inside of an already assembled melamine cage won't be easy. It will take some time to get the FRP cut to fit perfectly.

I recommend this over trying to seal the inside with paint or epoxy, especially for a tegu.

I built a huge cage for a savannah monitor a few years back. It's made out of plywood with a glass front. I bought some melamine laminate and glued it down to the inside bottom of the cage. It has a screen top that opens up like a chest type freezer. I put the whole thing on casters. It worked pretty good. It's sitting in my garage now. I'm thinking about making the other side of my garage a reptile room and put a few bearded dragons in it. The melamine laminate keeps the wood bottom from getting wet and it's easy to wipe clean, about like a kitchen counter top. I'd take a pic of it, but it's so da#% dirty I'm embarassed to show you, and it has some old rat breeding racks I built and not longer use stacked on top of it.
