Planning to get first corn snake

LizardMom Sep 21, 2005 12:36 AM

I'm looking to get my first snake at the Tampa show (as soon as I can convince my husband to let me get something without shoulders!).

I like the sunglows, butters and the reverse Okeetees. As most of the snakes will be babies, what do I look for to pick one that will be a really bright adult? Would any of my choices mated together make pretty hatchlings if I eventually decide to try breeding?

Does anyone know of good breeders who might be at the Tampa show?

Thanks in advance. I've learned a lot just reading everyone's postings.

Well as babies it is pretty hard to tell how their colors will come out. Ask about the parents! Most morphs bred together will give you one of three choices... the biggest chance is that you will get a normal that is het. Now with all the morphs and hets floating around you are pretty likely to get amels and anerys randomly too. Just remember to pick one you like!

Usually when you breed a morph to a morph, you get hets...unless atleast 1 is het for the other morph as well. ex: albino black rat x white-sided black rat = all 100% het
I'll be at the show most of saturday at the Lost World Reptiles booth...I believe all we hatched out this year that you're looking for are reverse okeetees, but we do have a good selection of other morphs.

If Kathy Love is there, she would be a great choice to buy corns from..

Kathy is usually at the Tampa show, and always has great-looking snakes. She can also give you a pretty good prediction on how her babies will look when they're grown. If you like okeetees, look for Lee Abbott. His are always fantastic. Good luck with hubby, I had a real battle with mine over the first "legless child", now I have three!

Someone else to look for is Rich. We can't say his name, but look in your program under the "S" vendors.

Thanks to everyone! I've been into lizards for some time, but never have owned a snake. I'm really amazed at the variation of colors and patterns in the corns. Are they active snakes?

What would you say is the most important thing to know about owning one?

they are easy to care for!! they don't require much and are great for a first time snake owner. babies are nervous and hide all the time but as they get bigger they come out more often. so don't freak out when you get one and all its doing is hiding. its NORMAL.
best to let it settle in to its new cage for a few days before you handle or feed it. look for kathy loves book on corn snakes. its great for anyone getting into corns. i have 3 myself, my ghost i bought from kathy and a local show a couple years ago. he is great. has never tried to bite me at all. thats not to say no of them will bite its just that mine has never tried. good luck
also beware once you get one you'll be HOOKED and want more!!

Thanks! I plan on getting the Love book. And thanks for the advice. Now I can't wait to get my little snake.
