How many mature females actually produce a clutch . . .

alicecobb Sep 21, 2005 07:00 AM

in a year they are bred? Assuming that they are over 1500 grams and the male is sexually mature, does anyone know on average the % of females who are bred (lockup has occured) that will lay a viable clutch in any one year?

I've seen posts warning that not all females will "produce" each year. That makes sense, but what are the odds that they will?

Thanks for your help.

I think if everything is done right....that number approacjes 100%. By everything right I mean: 1) adequate age and weight on the female, but not too much weight 2) mature agressive male 3) proper cycling of temps (and I even manipulate photoperiod, although I understand the the natural range of the BP, being much closer to the equator than we are, has a less dramatic variance in photoperiod) 4) TIMING

In the past 3 seasons, I tried for 10 clutches and produced 9....the other female slugged out. I know from the following season that the one unsuccesful attempt was due to bad timing on my part (female just naturally goes later than all my others, so needs a male later).

Several larger breeders use an ultrasound to make sure to place males with females at just the right time.

timing is off and it's easy to be off, nothing will happen. I have one egg left from an 8 egg clutch where timing was off. The female was very very late. I had eggs already hatched by the time she ovulated.

Most breeders hit in around 50%. Some are higher and some are lower but for the most part it averages in around 50%.

If my track record from anything I've ever done in life is any indication, I couldn't possibly be that much better or luckier than the "real" breeders. I can't believe there are lots of folks out there that try hard to breed and only produce viable clutches in about half the females they are breeding....maybe I'm misunderstanding your post.

Balls only:

This year 100% (3 for 3)
Last year 100% (3 for 3)
Previous year 66.66% (2 for 3 with the thrid being 9 infertile eggs)

Of those, I have one huge female that has bred each of those 3 years. The above data represents 5 females total. Now, I only try with females that I know are in prime shape...but still.

Thoughts?

And when you try 100 or 200 females, lets see if you get 100 clutches. It gets harder.

Hello,

More than 80% of the 1500g females that hooked up at my place laid. Two smaller girls did as well. Out of 80 eggs I had three go bad and two slugs.

I'm hoping for similar results this season!

I think he's awesome too. Oh, wow, you already know that don't you . . . since I got him from you. He's feeding great and up to 950 grams already. He'll be meeting some of my females in a few more months!

You did put some size on the little fella, huh?

Good luck with him this season!
