They are still relatively rare. Combined with difficulty in hatching eggs and getting babies started leads to higher prices.
If you buy from a credible and respectible breeder, he/she will have worked with the baby to get it started well. As such, the time involved requires a higher price.
Blackheads are pretty easy to get to breed, it is hatching the eggs that has become a major problem.
In talking with Kevin Barnett recently, he recommended working with Womas for a few seasons, and once you are 100% successful with them to start Blackheads.
They also breed at a later age than Womas, although there are reports of males in their 2nd year being active breeders. I'll be attempting to breed my pair in their second year this winter. Bought them has hatchlings at Daytona in '04. Male is now 6.5' long, female is 7'. We shall see... Anyone else heard of 2nd year breeding? I know Womas do. Also, one appealing thing about them is that they can hit 11', which is much larger than Womas.
Frank Retes bred blackheads around 18 months. That is the earliest I have heard of.

I figured as much. These were born in June-July of 04, so that's about right. Thanks.
