Hatchling question

chevygal Sep 21, 2005 05:48 PM

I have a hatchling about 9 weeks old, it's name is "Dozer". Anyway... for the last couple of days he has had runny poohs. I soak him every night for 15 minutes, and only feed him grass and clover 1/4 cup everyday with a supplement every other day. Other than the "runs" he seems normal. When should I start to worry? He only goes once a day. Any advice????? Thank you

Even though you'd think they can't pick up parasites somehow they manage to do it. Sometimes they carry a very slight load when you first get them but don't show any signs of it. As time goes by the parasites spread then you start to see problems.

When I see a poop change out of the blue when nothing in the diet has changed then it keeps happening, my first inclination is to take a sample to the vet for testing.
Most vets will run a fecal for you without having to see the animal first so it doesn't cost all that much. Then if they find parasites they'll want you to bring the animal in.
Runny poop isn't a good thing in any animal so that's what I'd try first then if no parasites are found, if it were my tortoise I'd go ahead & make an appointment if this keeps happening.

Let us know what happens & good luck too.

Well, everything seems to be ok now.... I changed it's heat light and increased the heat a little. no more runs and "Dozer" seems more active. We will keep an eye on him/her, and already found a vet in our area that will treat a tort. But so fsar seems to ok. Will keep everyone updated though. Thank you.

Great I hope this was juat a fluke.
It's a good thing too that you've already found a vet in case you need one. 10 years ago there wasn't a reptile vet here, I feel so blessed that one moved here before we got our tortoise.
I hear from people all the time.. "I can't find a vet" I'm so glad to not have that problem!

Keep us updated on your Dozer baby.
