Respritory infection in boa

jwilson Sep 21, 2005 09:51 PM

I just bought a suriname boa from a private collector. She is about 6 feet.her breathing is a little loud sounds a little wet. After handling a few bubbles come out of her mouth.I opened her mouth a little and there are bubbles inside. The cage she was housed in didn't seem to have adequate heating. since I brought her home i've kept her temp at 95 on the high/ 80-85 on the low end. It's been 3 days and the condition has not gotten worse, possibly a little better.Should she be able to shake this on her own or does she need antibiotics?..Thanks

Raising the temps will help boost the immune system. If it was my snake, I would still have a vet diagnose the current status of the illness & use antibiotics accordingly.

Sorry for the late response, I've been away, but I agree with Lizardman. You've done the first step with improved husbandry, but this sounds like it's been going on for a while at the previous owners. Snakes cannot cough, and their lung stretches down a long way so if pneumonia becomes a complication it can be very difficult to cure.

Thanks for the response. I was wondering if you were on vacation or something. Anyway I took her to the vet and am giving her daily oral doses of sulfatrim suspension. She has a healthy appetite so I'm thinking she'll be fine.
