Inbreeding Pros/Cons?

RalphSnakeMan Jul 19, 2003 01:09 PM

Recently I purchased two hatchling Honduran Milk Snakes (Expecting Delivery on Tuesday) I was thinking of breeding them two or three years down the road. But I am concerned about the issues of inbreeding. Can someone please tell me the pros/Cons to inbreeding?

Thank you,
Ralph

We have not seen many contingenical (sp!) defects in Reptiles, there are some (leucistic ratsnake, albino boas)

I would not hesitate to breed brother to sister, 1st generation offspring should then be outcrossed to new bloodline.

It is not unheard that 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation were interbred without any noticeable problems.

I strongly beleive to not interbreed past the 1st generation and future outcrossing can only help in maintaining a strong blooline.

This is just my opinion, great question...

I haven't produced more than F1 milks but have produced F2 corns, no problems. If you go to KS Home page, scroll through the list of breeders and check several websites you will find other breeders with F2, F3, even F4 stock with no problems. However, some ratsnakes do develop bug eyes and some boa breeders believe that you should not breed albino to albino. They recommend using a het for greater breeding success.
I guess it depends on the particular species.
