You can get them all over the place. I have one from radio shack and another I ordered online from a hobby store. One of mine has a laser the other does not.

Here are some links

They do not measure air temps, they measure the temps of objects. There is a huge difference there.

The good part in my opinion is, monitors do the same, they are concerned with the temperature of objects more then air temps.

I have used them for many years both in captivity and in the field. Good luck FR

kevwat87 Sep 23, 2005 10:49 AM

yea i do know they measure the temps of objects, i have a digital thermometer/hydrometer with a min/max memorie in the cooler side of his cage just so i know how the temps of the air fluctuate during the day, the max temp during the day sofare has been 89.9 degrees, and that was on the cooler side, but generally it stays around 85 with 75% humidity, im trying to ge tthe humidity levels up but they never seem to want to stay high once i get them there, and i have a solid oak cage with a plexiglass front i built myself and it is all sealed and the edges are colked with a nontoxic silicone, what else can i do i have tried soaking a towel and leaving it in there and the substrate is very moist, idk maybe my hydrometer is off or something should i build a misting system??? instead of just going in and spraying twice a day???

i use an exo terra (i think) fogger. regardless of who makes it, they're all the same and it seems to keep humidity atthe right level for him. you may wanna try that, i've found misting to be tedius as it never works well (for me anyway).

Go to sears... they have a good craftsman on for about $60.. good price and its a good gun. Also i have one of thos foggers and it works great.

I just got in trouble for mentioning something I use and where I got it from.

kevwat87 Sep 23, 2005 10:26 PM

do yuou have your fogger on a timer so you dont have to remember to plug it in and turn it off all the time??? and dont i have to set it in a water resevoir in the cage, seperate from his water bowl???

but it's far easier to build the cage so you can control ventilation than to bandaid it with humidifiers/foggers.

Control ventilation and humidity won't be much of a problem. There is no need for misting or fogging as long as ambients are conrollable (they cool down the air). Substrate has a big effect on humidity as well.

i got that mostly for me, i love the effect. it also keeps humidity at a good place. are there any bad effects from having it? (i really do wanna know)
also, i don't have it on a timer, i just kinda keep an eye on it.

'Bad' is not the right word, there is a time were misting/humidifiers are useful. It cools the ambients, which is fine, if that is the purpose.

But, if the cage is losing so much moisture it needs water added daily or weekly, it is a whole lot easier and less problematic to fix that issue (water loss).

People go a little wacky with ambient humidity, perhaps because it can be measured. I put more thought and effort into the substrate and let the ambients be what they are.

Think of humidity more like temps, you don't heat the entire cage to 150F and then cool it all off to 70F (at least I hope people don't do that). Offer varying levels of moisture in the cage at all times, let the monitor pick the humidity level it wants.

hmm was this a means to try and get a point across. Surely your not talking about wetting the bed. So I would assume your trying to tell these fellas a humid cage is not a wet cage.

I for one use foggers for my tree frogs they love the nice misty drops of water all over the cage. But it is not really used for humidity, it is to cool the air and to add what frogs like (water). That darn skin they have.

Now back to monitors the cage should be humid this prevents them from loosing moisture and drying up. The water tub is for drinking and getting wet. I am in Florida so it is easy for me to know what humidity is, seems it is harder for some others to grasp.

I agree with ya don't patch your problems fix them. Leave the bandaids and duct tape in the drawers.

kevwat87 Sep 24, 2005 12:01 PM

im going to try A diferent substrate today. what i cant figure out is how the humidity gets out of the cage, because it doesnt have very much ventilation at all and most of the ventilation is at the bottem, i have no ventilation at the top or around the basking area idk i will examin it a little more closely when i replace the substrate. maybe it is humid enough and i just dont reolize it , and i think im going to try a different hydrometer, any recomendations for a good one???

those are copies of our original temp gun. our $25 PE-1 is a terrific tool, and works great for reptile husbandry.

but those hobby companies you linked have worked so very hard to support the reptile world, contributed so much, so yeah, that's awesome that you would go out of your way to recommend their copy product over a reptile company's original.

that's sarcasm. why folks have an aversion to spending money with those that support them, and instead would recommend folks buying a knock off from somewhere else, that is beyond me. Frank and i don't always see eye to eye, but i couldn't possibly count the number of folks i have sent his way, among many many other breeders and reptile dealers.

such a catty , clickish hobby sometimes.

Hi Robyn, hows it going? well I hope. I guess most people do not understand, that we do not have to agree to respect. As you have recomended me, I have recomended you. Even just today at a local Tucson Reptile show. Keep up the good work, and I will continue to respect and I will keep recomending you and your good work. Thanks FR

you needed a salesman. He mentioned your product I mentioned one that I had purchased. Last I checked there was nothing wrong with that.

I never said not to buy yours or degraded your product. Please show me in my post one bad thing I said about you or your product?

I simply asked if he meant temp. guns. As he asked about digital thermometers. Then I posted links that I had saved from when I got mine. Like I said I have one from radio shack and one from an online hobby store. I advised them because I have their product. Nothing more nothing less. I am sure your product works great. But I haven't used it so I would not know. Maybe I should of included that in my post above. Would that of made you feel better?

Anything else you sell that I might get in trouble over? You know like Light bulbs? etc. I mean I would hate to offend you by recommending walmart or something.

drzrider Sep 25, 2005 04:07 PM

I have one of your PE-1s. I was checking temps one day and the monitor tail whipped it right out of my hand, across the cage, bounced off the other side, and into it's water.

I let it set for a day to dry out and it still works great.

Just thought someone may enjoy the funny story.
