Axanthic clarification .....

toshamc Sep 22, 2005 12:48 PM

I have just purchased a het axanthic male and hope to pick up an adult or sub female het for him next season and have a true ghost project in the next year or two. I was looking around at axanthics and could only find a few adult axanthic pictures and most of the adults that I saw had browned out. Is there a line that does not? Doesn't axanthic mean lack of yellow - how could they brown out as adults if they lack yellow? Is there anyway to tell the difference between a browned out axanthic and a normal? Anyone have a real good adult axanthic picture? And last but not least - I have this adult female - is she an axanthic or just an odd colored normal? Sorry my good camera is out of batteries but these are pretty good pictures - she doesn't really have your typical brown or yellow on her? (I know breed her - LOL) But just wanted some clarification.

Thanks,
-----
Tosha

Hi Tosha first of all what line are you working with right now? I feel that there are very nice Axanthics of all three lines and also some not so nice. Sort of like pastels. I have seen some VPI line which is the most sought after look just like a normal as an adult and I also have seen some that were still as silver as they were as babies and this goes true for all three lines out there. Well there are more than three but I am going to stick with the three most known VPI, Sk, Jolliff. I am currently working with the Jolliff line here is a pic of my adult male I am very pleased with how he has turned out. Like I said I personally would like to pick my stock from parents that have held there siver into adulthood. Just my 2 cents Paul at Steel City Exotics

Here's a pic of my 1.0 SK Axanthic. He has slightly browned out since I recieved him but you can definatley tell he's not a Normal. He's about 800g in this pic.

I can't tell at all from that picture that it's not a normal....

I'm in the same boat with axanthics, and hate that they seems to only stay the colours they hatch out as for less than a year! They are still beautiful, I'm just hoping to find a line that stays true and doesn't brown out....

I've got a little line I'm trying to prove out, in the picture he's in the 800+ gram range (just a guess) and currently eating Rodent Pro large rats.. Either way if he doesn't turn out to be genetic,I still like him, his name is Clifford and it's my 3yr old daughters first snake, we bought him as a captive hatched baby at a local petstore.
Here's Clifford's colors (or lack of)

in that particular picture, yes, it looked like a normal!

I would be more than happy to sell all my light normal males for a great price, saying they might be "browned out" axanthics.

It was just what I thought, I am frustrated that they don't keep their colour, since it's my favourite morph.

I know what your saying. The way I understand it there are three major lines SK, VPI and Joliff and they are not compatable. I have a 1500 gram girl I am hoping to prove out. I would like to buy a het male and find out right away, however, since I don't know her genetics which line would I buy? I will have to breed her to a normal male, wait two years, then breed her back to a male offspring. Recessive traits are not for the instant gratification types.

Alan

Personnaly I would try and breed her to an albino or other cross just in case she doesnt prove out you would still be working with some kind of morph instead of normals. If she does then you would have a nice group of double hets you would be working with.Just my 2 cents Paul

Definately try for the albino - then the following year - breed a male back to her - at worse you've got an albino project - at best a snowball project!

Unfortunately, I only have 100% het. albinos (and they are too young) at the moment and if I spend like .30 cents more on snakes right now my wife is going to freakin' kill me

Not really, but we just had our 3rd kid and I can't really justify the expense right now...maybe by next year.

LOL - I'm in the same boat with hubby - oh well - send her my way - I have an albino and only one het female to breed this season I feel like I'm wasting him (LOL).

Send which one?? My wife or the snake? If I send her, I can sell everything (except the kids of course) and buy (almost) all the snake I could ever want.
