Scott,
If you are staying you better hope Rita continues to weaken...She was the 2nd largest Hurricane on record yesterday behind Gilbert in 1988 and ahead of 190mph Allen in 1980....
If she goes to the Sabine pass area I think you will be fine, but if she comes your way as a Category 5 you should just drive away, wait for it to pass and come back at the very minimun....
Good luck to you Scott.....I am glad we are gonna dodge that monster down her in Corpus......It had us running around last night preparing...better safe than sorry.

Thanks guys. I think your right that we are far enough NorthWest to really avoid the Hurricane force winds. The only thing im worried about is the loss of power for more than a few days. I am little concerned over some of my animals over heating if that happens. Hopefully it all works out. We're gonna try and rd cruise the coast next tuesday or wednesday let me know if your interested!

Now there are some hurricane survivors! Awesome specs and splendida! You guys hunker down and be safe. I'm praying for you all. We were gonna leave but it looks clear. Calhoun county was a virtual ghost town with one way traffic. All the stares I got was weird. No snakes out on the way home but I bet tomorrow will be unusual.

We are in high spirits. In fact if it some of the outermost rain bands hit us we just might go road cruising. I mean someone has to ave those poor inocent reptiles..right?

Ok guys, first off I have seen firsthand what Katrina did in MS, LA, and AL. Trust me on this, what happened in New Orleans is NOTHING compared to the damage in south LA, and MS. The flooding may have been worse in N.O., but the wind damage on the eastern side of the storm in MS wasn't even comprehendable. We had considerable damage 230-240 miles inland, so people in Houston, you are NOT as safe as you think you are..lol. If the storm keeps pace and hits as a Cat 4 or even a strong Cat 3 then you'll know (hopefully anyway) what I am talking about. If I were you I would pack up what I could and head out of there. This ain't a strong thunderstorm boys, this is nature at it's worst, or the worst we know it is capable of anyway.

So my prayers will be with all of you as you try to hunker down, but it's probably not in your best interest to do so. I'd flee the area. May God have mercy on all of you...seriously.

It will be pretty bad a long way off from the center of it,I'm in Birmingham,AL and Katrina at her closest point was probably 120 miles or more away, and that was after she had moved inland and weakened to a minimal hurricane, almost down to a tropical storm. There were trees down everywhere, and a few houses were destroyed by trees falling on them.I went out to the store and got there just as it was closing,on the way home I watched a stop sign get flattened down against the ground.Had to drive about 5 miles an hour to keep the truck from blowing around. My power blinked off about 20 times, but amazingly it never stayed out until the next day after it was over,it went out almost everywhere else though.Stayed out for almost a week in a few places around here.Hurricane Opal back in the 90s was still officially a category 1 hurricane when what was left of the eye came through here, and I dont remember the damage being nearly as bad as what katrina did. With this one there is talk of possible spin off tornadoes as far east as here in Birmingham! This is definately NOT a stay inside and have a hurricane party storm!I've been in a lot of those, but this one is gonna really be bad for wherever it lands and for a long way on either side of it.If you have to go snake hunting,go a couple hundred miles away from it,before it hits.I can remember one time one was still out in the gulf, don't remember the name of it,but the snakes were going crazy here around Birmingham, found like 2 or 3 each pass on a 2 mile stretch of road, driving back and forth. Most were copperheads though, but still,by the time you turned around to go back, there would be 2 or 3 more new ones crossing the road.Never seen anything like it since.

The snakes were heading to high ground to get the hell out of there. The sad thing is people will stay behind cause they have a reason. I just hope i don't see people whineing about the gov't not stepping in fast enough cause they wouldn't leave when they were told to do so. All we need to do is give more power to the government , or wait we did that with Katrina huh. Take care and stay clear of flying debree and falling trees if you have to stay behind , also put on a life vest so you'll float cause they say the 17 foot sea walls won't hold this one back. Paul

It appears that the storm may head a little farther north than first thought. That would spare Galveston and Houston the worst of the storm.

And as afr as the gov't doing their job. They have done a wonderful job in MS, all because Haley Barbour informed FEMA two days before the storm hit that we would need help, and a lot of it. It is not the Feds fault that Mayor Nagin is a loser, and refused the help of the feds to begin with, and then when he saw how bad the devestation was getting, he blamed the very people who he refused help from at the biginning. I'm glad that there is a slightly different response with this storm.

My sister used to live in LA but not New Orleans area. From what she knows of the Mayor and Gvnr there to call them just incompetent would be a compliment to both .
Every type of screw up they could do when it comes to anything they did. The hurricane hit hard, dams broke but these two are the last two polticians you want in an emergency handling anything.
