savanna and tegu

herphead714 Jul 19, 2003 01:26 PM

Im my house at school we have a big pen(40 sq feet or so)in which we keep my 2 foot savanna cujo and a 3 foot blue tegu dexter. They are about the same size, at least in terms of there body length, and the get along really well. They sleep together, and on top of each other and never hiss at one another. The only problem is that the male tegu dexter sometimes bites my dude cujo. Im not sure if cujo is a male or female yet, but i was wondering if this is a dominance issue or could the tegu be tring to mate. The tegu doesnt bite cujo hard, never draws blood or rip off skin, and doesnt clamp down or stay attached to him. My savanna doesnt really mind much cause he barely notices. He climbs all over the savanna and bites him on his tail, arms and sometimes on his neck. The savanna has a bit moe mas to him and hes really strong so im not that worred about them hurting each other, but id like to know whats going on. This has been happining every so oftern for the past two weeks or so, and it doesnt matter if weve fed them or not. If he biting for a reason or is he just being an asshole?

They need to be seperated. In that size cage you should be able to split it right in half. Tegus are not monitors and vice versa!!! Tegus are more aggressive than a Savannah by far. Well from my expierence at least. The behavior your describing is both a territorial and a breeding behavior. I would consider this a territory issue and I would seperate them before a real fight happens and you have a dead lizard or a severly injured one.
Good luck

thanks for the advice, ill watch them carefully and seperate them when im not there. They just look so cute together when my savanna falls asleep with his arm around the tegu.

By the way , I just saw your picture on this site and your drop dead gorgeous. Are you single, and where are you from?

I've had both for years and Tegu's have much bigger teeth and jaw muscles,(but let go).Monitor's have smaller teeth and don't let go.Tegu's huff when pissed, monitor's hiss and tail whip.I'm betting on the monitor to inflict the most damage and ruin the whole set-up.
