Snake Identification

sydtpolk Sep 22, 2005 03:07 PM

Hey guys I just came upon this snake that a friend had, but he was unsure of what kind it was as am I. I would have posted a picture, but my camera isn't working. Well here goes!!! It is about 1.5 feet long with an all black head and belly. It's back is alternating stripes of black and white. When I walk up to the cage it "rattles" it's tail just like my bull. Anyone got any ideas as to what kinda snake it is?

There is a forum specifically for this type of question btw,...

Do you mean stripes around it or down the length of the body like a garter? Alternating B&W sounds like a Cal King perhaps...

I agree to Shawn,

in this coloration I never saw a member of the genus Pituophis (black belly's I know only from the black pine snake - and in this case I mustn't point to the detail of the black head... The same for other (partly) melanistic Pituophis (but I know not one melanistic morph).

Not all what "rattles" with the tail is a Pituophis .

The californian king snake, too, was my first thought when I red your discription.
