How much experience do you have probing snakes? Usually a female is 2 - 4 scales and males are closer to 8 - 10 scales.

Well I'll admit this is the first time I have tried. I just didn't want to hurt the snake, so I only went in as far as it went easily. Didn't want to rupture anything. I tried another that I know for sure is a male and it went about the same. Now let me check to see if I'm using the right scales. I'm counting the ones on the outer side of the belly, should I be counting thecenter scale?

All of my males are 9 scales or deeper. My females are from 4-7 scales. I have never had a female probe 1-3 scales. If I get one near 7 scales, I check (repeatedly, if necessary) for sperm plugs.
