A couple trinket pics for the forum...

Antegy Sep 22, 2005 09:40 PM

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share a couple pics of my little trinket ratsnake. Hope you all enjoy:

Also, does anyone know if these snakes exhibit any obvious sexual dimorphism?

Thanks,
- Mark

I envy good photographers. I can never get the light right.

Anyway, helena are sexually dimorphic with respect to size. The females are larger and beefier. The sizes I saw in the literature females 120 - 130 cm, males 90 - 100 cm. Interesting thing about the females being bigger is that this would indicate that the males don't perform ritual combat over the females. This differs from a lot of the ratsnakes but I guess is not shocking considering that helena has been grouped with radiata, subradiata, erythrura and flavolineata in a new genus (Coelognathus). I've always liked helena but since they are tropical they wouldn't appreciate the winter in a cold New England basement which is where I keep my critters. Oh well.

Regards
John
