Corns acting funny?

riiotgrrl Sep 22, 2005 09:57 PM

I have a couple of weird questions about my yearling corns.
When i am feeding them (they live together presently in a 29g tank, but i feed them in seperate containers) and they are reintroduced (almost simutaneously) they get to the floor of their tank and act jerky...almost like a breeding behavior. This is strange tho, because they are too young still to mate. I also think (i am not sure...) that my 'female' may be a male. Could this be a mock breeding behavior...getting ready for the real thing? i think it is strange....
This leads me to another question...has any one ever seen their corns 'scent marking' with their chins? Can they even do that? I noticed Raven smelling a surface in the tank and then rubbing her chin on it. It looked like she was trying to re align her jaw, but she was smelling the surfaces quite intently before hand. Raven is a strange one anyway...

The last question i have is i was wondering if anyone else's corns drink alot. My other snakes i rarely ever see drink. It seems like the corns drink alot.
I dunno. thanks for any replies. There is no emergency, i was just curious. Thanks!-jen

my amel corn went through a faze were he drank every day, which sucked because handeling him makes him loose control, the first time i handle him after feeding i put him on a towel and sure enough, after a few minutes he leaves me a stinky suprise

Mainly I just wanted to reply to tell you that those are two gorgeous snakes! I do know that corns usually drink a lot more than other kinds of snakes. Can't help you with the jerking, though. And I've never heard of corns scenting anything, but I'm no expert.

Is it like a stop and go motion as one is ontop of the other. Im no expert or anything but ive seen this with my two snakes also after i put them back after feeding. My thinking is they're just scared and are trying to hide and as one touches the other they just jerk cuz they're just affraid but thats all. If someone else has another idea i'de like to know cuz mine have done that twice.

When you put them back in their cage and one is on top of the other it is mating behavior. Jerking motions...
Might be a good idea to separate them....

thanks for the replies! I think i just have a pair of strange snakes . Thanks for the compliment too cornsrule. I am quite proud of them. The sunglow motley is going to be a great mate for my creamsicle corn when the time comes. The ghost stripe has shown alot of yellow on the underside as of late. I will post updated pics when i get batteries for my cam.

Corns not only do the "twitching" when wanting to mate they also do it when something stresses them.
Something like....the presense of another snake.
I have even seen it done with the introduction of a new substrate.
No, corns don't scent so I have no idea about the rubbing unless it was getting ready to shed.

I have a wc garter that does this when I pick her up..She makes small jerking movements with her head as she flicks her tongue..Is this just a stress reaction to me holding her?
I was going to ask on the garter board but this is the first time ive come across this for any other snake as well.

She has never bitten and has only musked me once when I first found her and she has already eaten 3 f/t fuzzies for me so she is taming down amazingly well..

Thanks C

I can't say that I am 100% sure with the garter snake but I do know I have seen the action with corns in direct correlation to something new in their environment, be it another snake or new substrate, being handled or any number of other things which would lead me to beleive a garter snake could esily display the same tendencies.
So in essence I would say it is a direct response to being held.
Stress?? probably. Harmfull or excessive stress? I doubt it seriously.
Will it get used to handling and stop the twitching? I would say more likely then not.

I wouldn't keep 2 corns together if they are under breeding size. If one of them was sexed incorrectly it could have serious consequences to the female if she is undersized. I can almost assure you the around feb-march some on is going to post about an undersized female that became gravid.
