snakito Jul 19, 2003 02:09 PM

ok right now i have my juvie brb in a 20 long tank with newspaper for bedding and a under tank heater. the water bowl on top of part of where the uth is 2 hides and a jungle vine. and i was wondering what is the best kind of bedding to use to keep up the humidity?? and how should i feed her so that she doesnt get it stuck in her mouth??? oh yeah i have the screen coverd like 90% or so so the humidity stays in and i do mist it every day. thanks in advance

I would reccomend ditching the fish tank all together. "Fish tanks are for fish" is my motto.

With the "screen" top covered 90% of the way I would worry that your boid is not getting proper ventalation.

Throw that fish tank away, put your brb in a rubbermaid, drill some holes in it while you wait for your new reptile enclosure. I recommend you check out www.herpcages.com if you're on a budget. Or better yet construct your own.

I admit I am not an expert on brbs, hell i have never owned one in my life. But I do care for colony of chondros, so I know my humidty quite well.

To answer your substrate question, I use paper towels and love them. I have also had great success with cypress mulch. It holds humidity for a long time, is safe for your boid to digest, is cheap, and has a lovely fresh wood like smell to it.

Here is a shot of my yearling acrylic rack system I came up with - use your imagination.

I agree a rubbermaid would be much better than an aquarium. Just be sure that the lid is fastened securely. This can be done with two belts or two strings. Better yet construct a rack system using rubbermais tubs. An example is below. It is contructed using melamine sheets that you can buy in 2' by 4' sheets. These are used as sides and as the different levels, which requires very little cutting. This system holds heat and humidity well and the snake will feel secure. Not much to look at though. As for substrate I stick to newspaper or paper towels in this system because they are absorbant, clean, cheap, fit well, and you can't see in the tubs anyway.

I've always fed my BRB in a seperate container, that way you don't have to worry about substrate-in-the-mouth.
