SAD news * Zambi my female werneri gave birth all dead :0(

PHEve Sep 23, 2005 03:16 PM

I found five babies on branches still curled up in their sacs,

I picked them up and gently removed the sacs and they were all dead. One even looked like his head was very misshapen/deformed.

The rest looked perfectly formed, cute lil guys but dead.

Any one know why they would all be born dead?

Here is a pic, I wanted you to see the last guy in particular his head is deformed I guess.

Such a Shame !

Oh, how sad that is! I'm so sorry for your loss. They are so precious. Sorry I can offer no advice as to why they may have died, but I sure hope Zambi is doing okay.

Seeing as you found them in the branches, my guess is that they didn't experience the stimulus needed to initiate their attempts to break free from their egg sacs and subsequently died. When this happens and it is found immediately after, generally the prescription is the pick the egg sac back up and redrop it. The fall and impact is what stimulates the babies to break out of their egg sacs. Can't comment on what could cause the odd formation of the babies head. Possibly inadequate care of the female at some point during her pregnancy (probably in shipping before you got her) or lack of an adequate basking spot. Could be any number of other things as well. You should look very carefully in the cage to make sure there aren't any babies walking around that were dropped from an appropriate level and exited their egg case properly. Further, you may wish to go to the link below and look in the Breeding and Reproduction forum. There is a new thread there about werneri babies by some others with recent experience with them. They would likely be a lot of help to you if you do in fact find any live offspring.

Eve, I'm sorry to hear about your little ones.
If they're anything like Jacksons, you might still find some live ones running about the cage. At this point, there's no harm in checking, right?

Eve,

I know you were so looking foward to having little babies. Just know that it wasn't your fault, you pampered little Zambi! Again, I'm very sorry, and I hope everything is alright,

Michele

Hopefully together we can learn more about these different types of chameleons, and have more captive breds born.

Thats why we are are here to share our experiences good and bad/ happy and sad!

I will keep reading everything I can, and listening to other keepers and get things right sooner than later I hope.

Thanks also Chris for your suggestions and link you provided me with, Appreciate everyones thoughts and kind words.

I am very sorry to here about the babies dying. i had 5 beardies born and they died within hours .

Are werneri hard to care from? It seems that lots of people keep them.
