Here are some pics of our new Uromastx, and I'd like to know what everyone's thoughts are on using playsand in the cage. Safe or not?

i use washed playsand and haven't had any problems. Get a mesh scooper from Exoterra or the like, or make one yourself. The sand is easy to sift and clean and my guy likes to 'dig' it.
Many of us who have kept uros for years use paper towels for the little guys for a year to prevent accidental ingestion of substrate that could cause an impaction. You will find the kind of substrate people choose is varied and everyone has an opinion as to what they like the best. Your guy looks great, but is small. If he were mine, he would be on paper towels. I'm sure you will get many opinions, but ultimately you will have to choose what you feel is best for your little one. Good luck with him.

It would be good practive to remove the sand until he's a bit older.

Nice! At this age take him off the sand (impactation issues). I keep my very young on paper towels. Had a paper route as a kid and i remember how much ink got on my hands. As far as using sand, I use. Have seen on other sites people using tile, shelf liner, paper towels, bird seed, alapha pellets, and millet seeds.
It's a subject that become a sore spot for many people, ad has caused plenty of problems on other forms.
