bamboo??

djseibert68 Sep 24, 2005 04:53 AM

i know this question has already been asked, with little answer. but does anyone know of any problems with live bamboo? i was actually hoping to raise my humidity a little with it. so far i have chosen no substrate since my cresties are pretty young. but even with twice a day misting i cant keep it over 70% for more than 30 min. usually stays about 55%.

I asked the samething.
Ive talked to some people about it and they said there might be problems with mold.

If you have a basemnet put you tank down there. Basements are usually a little more damp than the house. Thats where i keep mine and the humidity is around 50% during the day and just a little light misting at night keeps it at about 85% until the morning.

im not the most knowledgeable, so hopefully someone better will help you.

cresteds do not need a consistant humidity of 70% or greater. they do just fine with fluctuation, and a high point of 70-100% for an hour or two, drying out, and high humidity again. if you keep your cage above 70% continuously you will run in to several problems, and mold is always the first one. after that you could run into respiration issues with your geckos from poor ventilation/stagnant air. of course all of this has to do with which type of cage you're using, or how much air flow you are getting through your room.
if you're going to use live plants, use something that is easy to keep alive, and easy to come by. like pothos or something. it grows quickly and is very hardy.

I don't know if bamboo leaves, if consumed would be harmful to geckos or not. However, I don't think real bamboo is easy to find. "lucky" bamboo is not real bamboo but some other bamboo look alike. Unfortunately I can't remember what it is. In either case, not sure if it is safe for crested geckos.

You would be better off using plants already known to be safe for crested geckos.

i did some research on this and no,lucky bamboo isnt even in the bamboo family. it is called the ribbon plant and is listed as poisonous to animals on the ASPCA.org website. although i personally have seen a turtle devour these plants and suffer no apparent ill effects, i wouldnt risk it. i had it in my firebelly tank for 2 years with no ill effects, but now that i know better its out
