2 questions please help everyone with experience with superworms and silkworms

chong188 Jul 19, 2003 04:22 PM

hi im interested in breeding superworms. i am planning on the breeding setup to be in a 10 gallon aquarium with a screen lid on top to prevent escaping. as the substrate i plan on putting 6 inches of peat moss down and keeping moist to touch. as food and hydration ill put a carrot in every 2-3 day and then maybe sprinkle some oats or corn flakes everyonce in a while. im going to put some dead wood (sterilized of course) in the 10 gallon as well. will this set-up work. p.s. what is a good number of worms to start out with. p.s. these are the zophoba superworms

now on to the 2nd question

i live in saskatchewan (thats in canada if some of you dont know) i would like to find a place that i can get silkworms.

thanks Jesse Olson

I don't suggest using peat moss as a subtrate and then putting grain foods on top to feed them. They will mix them all together and you will end up with a moldy mess. Use their grain food as their substrate and some vege like carrots on top as their moisture. Also read down some. There are posts talking about breeding superworms. Make sure you know what type of worms you have...super or meal. The breeding method has some difference.

As for silkworm in canada, I have no clue. sorry.

I posted all of the info that you said (I think that you got it from my post.) That is the way that I keep mine and I've never, ever had a mold problem. Just make sure that you know how much food your mealworms can handle. Again, I keep them this way and have NEVER had a mold problem.

As for how many to start with, this depends on how soon you would like to start feeding them off. I think that about 500-1000 mealworms would get you feeding pretty soon. With the way I keep mine, there are always about 1000ish mealworms and maybe 150-200 beetles in the bin at all times.

You can get silkworms here in Canada at Silkworms.ca
