A little concerned

notallthere Sep 24, 2005 03:15 PM

Rachel was about to leave last night when she heard a small "squeek" from her dorm. She thought she might have had a mouse loose in her room, but upon further inspection, she found that the "squeek" was coming from her Brooks Kingsnake. She said that it was "coughing". I told her to change the bedding and to wash everything that was in the tank, mainly because she didn't know what kind of bedding she had in there. She replaced the old with new aspen bedding, and washed everything including the tank itself. The lil girl seemed to be ok for a little bit after that... but Rachel heard her "cough" a few more times later on in the evening. Should we be concerned? If so.. does anyone have any suggestions?

Check for saliva and or bubbles around the mouth and nostrils. Literally hold the snakes face up to your ear and listen for wheezing. It may have a respiratory infection. It may also be beneficial to dramatically increase the temps on one side of the cage, but only on one side. Heat can help a snakes natural immune system kick in but you very well may have to get the snake some antibiotic injections. Tom Stevens

to recover from whatever substrate the snake was in. If it was dusty, she might be hearing the snake sneezing to clear its nose. But a vet visit is never wasted, if only for peace of mind.

...the jpg looks like a bigger head than the body behind it...Id be fully alert for regurging syndrome too...as long as it feeds well & holds it down, it'll likely fatten up rapidly.

Good luck RxR

My hypo brooksi sneezes every once in a while, at least that's what I think it is. She makes no wheezing noises though and never has any signs of illness, so i don't worry about it too much.
