are you okay down there laurav?

johnnyblazekfd Sep 24, 2005 03:46 PM

Just wanted to see if you were okay down there. I knew you said you weren't able to get out. I guess its better you didnt try with everybody that got stranded trying. We were supposed to get hit when it was planned to come up the I-35 corridor but lucked out since it went east. We didnt even see a drop of rain, sunny partly cloudy skies and hot w/ a nice cool breeze. How'd you fair?

but, it is towards the bottom, so probably no one has seen it.

We were lucky, the storm moved off to the east of us. We only received about 60mph winds and rain. My car received a bit of damage, but thanks to someone purchasing one of my boas yesterday (before the storm hit), the windows can be replaced. The house seemed to fare well. We've not been able to get a look at the roof yet, but what we have seen looks fine. Apparently, if we lost power, it was back up before we woke up this morning. We fared better than those in East and NE Houston, and of course those sitting on the coast and LA in Rita's path.
Around 2:30am (when the storm was just hitting us)I heard the bells on the door opening and closing - thought my husband was just going out for a smoke. ..discovered a short time later that Dyani (Dee-Yawn-ee), our autistic daughter) was coninuously going out into the winds and rain (she loves rain) - that horrified us.
Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to those folk. As well as those that perished in the mad flight from the coast.

That was thoughtful of you.
I'm glad you fared well too.
Hopefully we'll hear from others that went through Rita as well.

Glad to hear your okay with little damage so far, hope everything turns out allright. Did your car windows get busted by debris? It must not have been that bad if you slept through the night and your daughter was out playing in it=) gain, glad everything turned out okay, sort of... Jon

I'm assuming it was debris, but I didn't notice anything unusual in my car. I'm assuming it was mother nature, rather than a man animal up to no good. The problem with my daughter is she has no clue of danger. She played hop-scotch on a glas storm door (that was laying on the ground) a few years ago...cut her feet all up, and thought it was fun. She would walk in front of a car (she's done this too - she's escaped her daycare center a few years ago and ran across a 4 lane busy highway...got picked up by a stranger on the highway who dropped her off at the local fire department...the day care was not shut down. She has run out of our house down the street and into a neighbor's house (we didn't know this neighbor), up his stairs and was bouncing on his bed. With out a doubt she would walk off the edge of a cliff, climb up a powerline tower, try to grab a lightening bolt or dance in a tornado. Her inability to understand danger of any kind keeps us on our toes and has nearly given us a heart attack many times over. We were so lucky nothing happened to her when she went outside. May we always be so lucky.

Thanks for posting the update. We're glad to hear that you guys are all right! Good thing you got your daughter inside before she got hurt. During Katrina, a bunch of our neighbors were standing outside watching a metal shed flap in the winds. We couldn't believe how stupid they were being and they didn't even realize it!

Glad you're okay!

Thanks,
Celia

amaze me on just how stupid people can be at times. My daughter has an excuse to not understand danger, as she is mentally disabled (more about this in the "glad to hear you're ok" post in this thread), I just can't fathom your neighbor's though!

I kept thinking of the movie "Twister," (one of my favorites, I must admit) when they said, "We've got cows!," (flying cows that is), as we live right next to a very poorly constructed horse shed...I feared I'd be saying, "We've got horses!," when we thought we'd be getting a direct hit from the catagory 4/5 Rita. Of course, my imagination also took me on a horror trip of "what if's"...and the writer in me sports a very good imagination...
