A little help from Hurricane Rita - Our last Boa litter of the season...

wetceal Sep 24, 2005 09:00 PM

Well, this is it...our last litter of the season! Not Colombian Boas...but some Brazilian Rainbow Boas...Hypos and Het. Hypos to be exact! Earlier this season we bred our male Hypo BRB (EBV line) to our female 100% Het. Hypo. This was the first time breeding for both the male and the female so we weren't sure if it would be successfully, especially since the female was small.

Well the male seemed to do the job and the female was definitely gravid. We've been waiting on her to give birth for the past month or so and it seemed like it took Hurricane Rita to convince her that it was time! She gave birth today to 9 beautiful, healthy babies - 1.1 Hypos, 4.3 100% Hets., 1 still born, and two slugs. The Hypo vs Het. ratio was not in our favor but that's okay...we're more than happy with the way this first time mom handled herself!

Here are some photos...

The Hypo sire

The pair of Hypo babies...

And the Hypos with a normal from last year...

Can't wait for next year!

Thanks for looking,
Celia

Celia,
...Congratulations!! Last time I talked to you about this project was last year and you were hoping for them to produce this year. How is the Katrina recovery going for you?
Jeff

Yes, we were really hoping the pair would go for us this season and the female did a great job too! We were worried that she would have problems or complications because she is fairly young and small but she handled herself beautifully!

As for the Katrina recovery, things around here are slowly but surely getting back to normal. Several people in our area still do not have power but we were lucky enough to have our electricity restored last week. There was some "Hurricane panick" for Rita but it wasn't bad at all - mostly long lines at the gas stations and grocery stores. We were afraid we would lose power again during Rita but fortunately, we didn't. We've been fairly busy with local business because of all the people who need feeders for their animals or need new animals for the ones they lost. Stores around here are still closing early but that's really it. All in all, we were extremely lucky in the whole situation!

Thanks,
Celia

Glad they finally made it and are ok, sounds like the loss of power didn't hurt them at all. Looks like I'll need to prep a new home for a couple of those babies!!!!!!

Congrats on the hypos! Would you be willing to post some pics now and then? Although we don't really know eachother....I saw the posts on the Boa F. and am glad Rita's bark was worse than her bite.

I'll be sure to post photos of them as they shed and grow!

Thanks,
Celia

Congratulations on that nice looking clutch. You know, with hypomels becoming more popular, we should really try to work together to outcross the lines. I'd be interested in trading hets at some point to anyone who has crossed their hypomels to unrelated normal animals. Let me know,

Mike
