new owner with juvies

jgaeta Sep 24, 2005 09:23 PM

Hello, I just got two brand new little cresties (yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) and one won't stop drinking from the paper towel I temporarily have as a substrate. Is that ok or a sign of something bad?

I wouldn't worry about it too much unless he's actually ingesting the paper towel. If they were shipped or in a pet store (or even just stressed from the move) he could just be very, very thirsty. Lots of cresteds drink from surfaces when you spray them instead of from bowls. Enjoy your new guys!!

Thank you. I can't believe how drastic their colorchange can be: when I picked out one he/she was almost completely white and two hours after I brought it home he/she changed to having a dark red strip completely down its back and pickish orange spots on its sides - crazy.

LOL, Yeah, when I bought my most recent gecko he went from being a red bicolor dalmation to being a bone white dal the first night in the hotel, then pinky-beige as a day color and red bicolor again at night. Plus, you get the added excitement of watching them finish their ontogenic color change too!

You said your paper towel substrate was temporary? For juvies it's a good choice b/c you can see their food and their poop and they can't ingest it like some more natural substrates.

WOW that was cool... one of my juvies was all about it the other one froze the entire time is that normal? Also, the cricket hunter did injest a little bit of coconut fiber substrate during the hunt, is that a big deal?
