Looks great! What is that great looking finish coat? Is that a fleckstone paint, or did you by the material that way?

UAWPrez Sep 24, 2005 11:45 PM

Fleckstone...I painted it black first then textured it with "manhattan mist" Flectstone paint, then used the clearcoat to protect it.

Good looking cage. Might want to protect your snake by putting something, build a cage, arounf that bulb. JCP like to wrap up on stuff and that cage isnt that high so he might find that is the best place to hang out on

I'll answer this one for yah brother, it's a low watt light bulb, warm to the touch yet not scalding hot like other 60 or 100 watt light bulbs.

What feels warm to the touch to us, feels HOT to a reptile. Dont forget our body temp is 98.6 ° , and no matter what wattage the bulb is it can still burn a snake and is unsafe when its unprotected.

Hey easy killer, I didn't build the cage, that's just what he told someone else in a previous forum when someone asked him about it, I was helping the progress of said forum along!

I've used 15 watt bulbs in my cages for years. You can put your hand right on the bulb for hours and it won't even get uncomfortable, so I don't see how it would be possible to burn a snake. On my larger cages I use higher watt bulbs and build bulb guards. However, I didn't follow my own rules on this one. I used a 40W "Reveal" bulb and just dialed down the temp with a dimmer. However, after reading the above post I put my hand on the bulb and it WAS too hot, even dimmed down. So I immediately replaced it with a 15W bulb, until I can finish the bulb guard that is pictured below. The finished bulb guard is from another cage, but should be what the new one looks like when I'm finished. Thanks for your concern, you might have averted an injury to my beautiful JCP.
P.S. you might notice the openings in the wire are smaller on the new one, the first one was for a good sized boa, I've used a smaller sized opening with this one and I think I like it better.

I have used hardware cloth (wire) also to make a bulb guard; however I am concerned that it might not be strong enough if my big blackthroat monitor, or my water monitor (when he grows) bangs into it. What are your thoughts on that?? What are the length, height, width that you use. I have been looking at wire storage racks, drawers, etc. and have found nothing suitable.

UAWPrez Sep 25, 2005 08:42 PM

the finished bulb guard is a cube and each side is 5", but I'm making the new one 6", just to keep them a little further from the bulb.
