Best Enclosure For A Corn???

malesh02 Sep 24, 2005 10:41 PM

Hey all. I have my 1.5 year corn in a 20L tank and she seems to love it. Only problem is maintaining a constant ambient temp. What is the ideal enclosure set up for my corn? Something she can remain in for the rest of her life that is ideal in all ways. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Most will tell you a 20long is a good size. I built a new viv for my Corn snake (14 months old and 35 inches long) about 2 months ago. It is 42"L X 27"H X 24"D. It has a den beneath it and a ledge on the main floor. The temps are controlled by a 100 watt red heat bulb on thermostat that keeps the top of the ledge at 85 degrees, the main floor at 77, and the den on the concrete floor between 68 and 70 degrees (depending on the temperature in the basement). There is no UTH, other lighting, or additional humidity. The viv sits right near a window and I put in a humid hide when Motega begins his shed cycle (he doesn't use it all the time then either). I use part lizard litter and part aspen shavings. I think most snakes are housed in enclosures that are too small: they are always trying to get out. I sometimes sit with the front doors of his viv open and watch him slither around. He comes up to edge and looks out, tasting the air, but then continues his exploring activities in his viv. I think there should also be a more complex environment than paper towels and plastic hides. That's just my opinion.

a 40 gallon breeder should be great. gives them enough room to explore and feel comfortable. and that should also provide enough room to give decoration so the snake feels more natural!
