swelling in her face

csiviper Sep 25, 2005 10:33 AM

i have a female ball that is 1800 grms. i have noticed over the last few days that her face has started to swell right around her heat pit area. it gives her face a very boxy look. when i examened her the swelling is between her teeth and her lip. her inner mouth is nice and pink and shows no signs of swelling, its just that localized spot on each side. she eats frozen rats or prekilled ones so i dont believe it to be a bite injury. plus there was no evidence of a cut or abbrasion. what might it be and what can i give her to fight it if its an infection. now to make matters a little more interesting she is due to lay a clutch of eggs in 20 days. thanks for the help.

Actually my female was doing the same thing...............she was due to drop her eggs about 25 days after I noticed her swelling problem............I brought her to the vet..........after many tests the only thing he could figure was it was some sort of a bacterial infection........We tried many different meds.......but we had the best success with FORTAZ........

She is better now...........but I have no idea what caused it.....

Here is a pic of her at the time she was swollen.........

almost sounds like mouth rot, hopefully it's not though. It'd be easier to get an idea if you had a picture.

i have seen and experienced mouth rot and this isnt like any that i have ever seen before. not saying that it isnt but there is no cheesy substance present just swelling. i have batryl but dont know if that is ok for a pregnant snake. here are some pics to look at. the dark spot in the first pic was just a piece of cypress mulch that came off no problem.

I agree, it looks like some kind of infection, certainly, but not mouth rot. I would take a trip to the vets.

I believe it may be mouth rot, not sure how to fix it I guess you would have to ask you local vet.

Joseph,

It looks similar to something I’ve seen in some of my snakes.

I have come to the belief that it's mouth rot from rubbing, since it occurs in animals that are on P/K as well, and on paper.
