Rescued Corn Snake...

PhunkeyPhish Sep 25, 2005 11:38 AM

So I was on my nigtly jog around my campus when I came across a snake laying across the sidewalk. Being the curious pre-vet student tha I am I stopped to investigate. It was laying completely still and had a couple ants on its head so I thought it was dead. I tapped it and it begin to slither a bit and so I decided to stick around to see if I could hold what I thought was a wild snake. Well it was very easy to hold and allowed me to handle it without even attempting to bite. I identfied it as a corn snake and due to its lack of struggle to free itself I decided it was probably an abandoned or escaped pet. So I took it into my home. I haven't seen any advertisements about a lost snake but I'm confident it was once a pet because of its temperment and its readily accepting the terrarium. I'm housing it in a 20 gallon tank and have a heat pad to get one end to about 85-87 and the other end stays about 75. I've got a water dish, two hides (one on each side of the terrarium) and a stick. I'm using aspen rep bedding. I've heard good stuff but wanna check out what experienced snake keepers use as substrate. I've kept iguanas, bearded dragons, and turtles so I am not new to reptiles, although I have never kept a snake so I am very new to them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ian

It's between 2.5 to 3 feet... how old do you think it would be? Is there any simple way to sex it by appearance of the vent?

thanks

i would guess its about 1 to 1 1/2 years old. but its hard to tell. some snakes grow faster and or slower by how much they are fed. i have 2 corns that are 3-4 foot at least that are 2-3 year olds.
i'm not good at telling the sex by looking (i just have them for pets) but i've read males are thicker then females just past the vent.
just my thougts since i'm a pet owner. it would be neat to see a photo if you could post one.

i have 4 corns, a 6-7 foot jungle carpet python, honduran milk and a solomon island ground boa.
