Educated Egg-dicator...

turtle_22 Jul 19, 2003 05:35 PM

Hi,

I noticed my female box turtle digging a little, with her front legs. As I know she's been mating a great deal this summer, there is the possibility that she is pregnant.
I picked her up and looked at her behind, where her tail is. It looked as if, where the skin is, on both sides of her tail there was a lump on each side. I could almost swear that these 2 lumps could've easily been eggs and that she is gonna 'pop' any day now!
I removed her and placed her into her own, private enclosure with enough dirt so she could comfortably dig down if she does lay.
Do you think these lumps were eggs...I never noticed those lumps before...almost puffy-like. Do you think she is about to lay eggs?

Thanks!

those lumps are her pelvic bones, eggs dont travel down that far unless it's one at a time when she's laying
turtles have a uterus which is in their abdomen.. not their butts
the only sure way(that I know of) to tell if they are pregnant or gravid is to palpate, unless you want to take her to a vet for an x-ray
Palpating

She will dig with her hind legs, not front legs. The other post is correct: those bumps you see are not eggs. You may be seeing more of her rump if she's gravid, though, and can no longer fit all of herself in her shell.
Sounds like she's hunting or trying to dig a little to cool off , maybe.
