Has anyone ever used plastic hardware cloth?

nez02 Sep 25, 2005 07:05 PM

I went to lowes to price out the cost of building a cage. When I was looking at the hardware cloth I noticed they have plastic hardware cloth. It was about 1/4 the price of the pvc coated hardware cloth and was black. Has anyone ever used it and would it be safe if my cham decided he wanted to climb on it?

Thanks
Nez

I don't know for sure but I don't think there would be anything wrong with it. But when I built my cage I had to spend $80 on that hardware cloth, sounds like a deal to me.

I think I am going to use it. But I would deffinatly like more opinions on it. It's the exact same size and thickness as the hardware cloth except its 13.93 for a 4 ft X 50 Ft roll. So I think that it will definatly cut my costs down.

Thanks for the help

P.S. How big is your cage and where did you get the plans? And if you dont mind would you post a pic of it?

Thanks alot I built my cage using your plans only I made it 2 feet wide instead of 4. I was going to use the plastic hardware cloth but I found the pvc coated metal screen at ace for 5.08 for a 5ft by 2ft piece. So I just went with that. Thanks alot for the response and the cage plans.

If you brush your hand across the plastic stuff and compare it to the PVC coated cloth you will find that the PVC coated is much nicer to the touch then the plastic. My veiled occasionaly climbs on the screen so I went with the PVC coated. I am also thinking the plastic stuff can melt and may be more prone to feeders eating through it. The PVC coated cloth has a very high heat rating and shouldnt melt.
